Trending at the Interior Design Show – IDS13 Wrap Up

Trending at The Interior Design Show, IDS13~

January brought an incredible opportunity to attend The Interior Design Show in Toronto, Canada to peruse the latest and most innovative products in the interior-design industry up-close and personal.

“The Interior Design Show (IDS) is Canada’s largest contemporary design event. Since its inception in 1998, over 500,000 design professionals, consumers and media have attended. Inspirational exhibits feature both emerging and established designers and highlight international interior design, architecture and industrial design trends.”

Invited as a guest of Cambria, a company which designs and produces stunning and innovative quartz counter-tops, I attended a preview party at their lovely Toronto based Showroom.

Quartz counter-tops are edging out granite as the newest low maintenance kitchen and bath solid surface.  One of the perks of attending trade shows in addition to all the great products that an interior designer can be exposed to, is the wonderful relationships that are created between industry partners and peers.  I had the opportunity to meet up with several designers that I had met at KBIS, The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago last year and also to meet other designers in real life that I had previously interacted with via social media. These meet-ups or tweet-ups have become a welcomed  side benefit and are quickly becoming a focus of attending these events for many.

Here’s a photo of some of the Designing Women that I partied with at the beautiful Cambria Showroom prior to the IDS13 Opening Night Party!

Fast forward to the first day of the show, bright and early here’s what was on display as we entered the showroom.

Being on a mission for an upcoming project with my  fabulous Interior Designer friend Rose, we attempted to buy the tony black and white bag sitting pretty on the plastic light up patio chair, I mean who wouldn’t want one (the bag)? The salesperson cut us such a great deal; we could buy 100 of them for $79 ea. Cough. Well, it really wasn’t such a great bag anyway, kinda saggy.

Always some FAB lighting. I stop and stare at every beautiful chandelier regardless of where I am and you may spot me trying to capture it on instagram while my companions walk on.

This was absolutely the coolest lighting display at the show. By Living Lighting on King. Flush mounted fixtures with a sunburst surround repeated installed on a vertical wall. Ingenious.

Kudos must go to the display with most creativity in my opinion, the IKEA kitchen. Yep, I said that. The lighting hanging from a ballast gives intimacy in a proverbial warehouse setting!

Cabrits-ing in London

Have you Cabrits’ed lately?

Victoria ⊕ Albert create not just a tub, but an experience. If you’re skeptical, take a look at pictures I snapped while in their London showroom during September, 2012’s Blog Tour. Let’s start with the striking atrium of the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour, London. I shot this photo just outside the Victoria ⊕ Albert Showroom.

What makes a V ⊕ A tub so special, a stand alone in the industry?  And I mean stand alone in more ways than one; Victoria ⊕ Albert is a British company that produces free-standing tubs and basins which are  crafted from  100% QUARRYCAST®, a proprietary blend of naturally white volcanic limestone and high performance resins. The finish on these tubs is extraordinary!

Not only is the Cabrits tub a work of art that envelopes the bather, it is composed of a single seamless piece! Truly fine craftsmanship!

The Cabrits 55 Basin to pair with your Cabrits tub

Even accommodating for the well dressed gents~

@MrGoodwillHunting cabrits in style!

The Cabrits tub is unique as it is contoured for the human body. With a raised center, it supports your legs from beneath the knees. Most notably is the back of the tub which is in somewhat of a reclining position, making it possible for even tall men to stretch their legs out vs. a cramped position. The reclining position also lends itself to an amazingly relaxing state that some bloggers took advantage of even without filling it with hot soapy water. I too sampled the tub and it was quite nice. I mean, really, it didn’t even wrinkle the clothing on the gentleman in the tub. Must be The Carraway Concept.

Victoria ⊕ Albert has a vast and amazing selection of tubs and basins for every style, from clean and contemporary to classic and claw foot.

A stunning example of a customized tub with mother of pearl mosaic tile on the surround~ So beautiful!

Here’s some more beautiful images and information about the Cabrits and white volcanic limestone.

What better way to ‘wrap’ up a Cabrits experience. Why with a luxurious and authentic Turkish Towel Shawl Collar Terry Bathrobe!

Thjs is not me, but I do have this robe! It was a lovely gift from sponsor The Turkish Towel Company!

A very big thank you to Modenus, a designer’s resource, for bringing 14 bloggers from around the world (especially me) to London along with sponsors like Victoria ⊕ Albert, who made us feel so genuinely welcome!

Thank you to our wonderful Blog Tour London 2012 Sponsors!

My Mom Invented #Twitter!

It’s true. I don’t care what you say. And you heard it here first.

When I was a young girl growing up in Michigan, my mom used to impart words of wisdom to me. Little snippets of information to commit to memory. Most likely 140 characters or less, since she invented twitter, but I didn’t know it way back then. She would tell me things like, “Leave a little bit on your plate, it’s good manners”. She would also tell me “It’s always nice to take a hostess gift.” “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”; notice all these sayings will fit into a tweet. Ingenious!

I would just look up at her and think, “Wow, she is really smart”. Wonder how she knows all this amazing information. Big questions from a then 6-year-old. Then one day, I asked my Mom, who, by the way, led by example in always leaving a couple of bites on her plate and always taking a piece of crystal to everybody she knew and even every time she came to visit me after I entered holy matrimony, thus my very own wonderful collection of antique and cut crystal, thank you very much!, so as I was saying I asked my mom “Mom? How do you know these things?”  and SHE REPLIED “A Little Bird Told Me!” THEN I replied, “Mom, birds don’t talk!” (I didn’t know about parrots yet) and then she said (are you sitting down?) “No, but they tweet.” OMG, it dawned on me several months ago and I just knew I couldn’t keep it a secret any longer. MY MOM INVENTED TWITTER!

Unfortunately she did not live to see me communicate with people around the globe via tweets. She would be so proud that I turned my Elementary School Conduct Score of 4 due to “Talking too much” into something somewhat useful, thus Chatti Patti. Some of these “tweeps” (Peeps that tweet) as we refer to them, I will soon have the opportunity to meet in real life when I travel to LONDON! with the Modenus Blog Tour London which I am so blessed to be a part of! Kind of like meeting your European pen pal from your childhood. I had one of those, did you?

Some of the events that we will attend on this tour are:

TENT LONDON

“London Design Festival’s most diverse design event; a vibrant showcase of the best contemporary design taking place at The Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London”

 DESIGN CENTRE CHELSEA HARBOUR LONDON

DESIGN JUNCTION

“The largest destination for design and culture during the London Design Festival”

DECOREX INTERNATIONAL

“Decorex International is an exquisite interiors event at the heart of the London design community.”

AND MORE! I’ll be blogging all about it very soon!

I will be tweeting live from London about all of the wonderful sights and with each tweet thinking of you, Mom.

Mom and Dad on their Wedding Day. They eloped but don’t they look so happy?!
